RPGamer and Xenogears

Hey what's going on guys? It's been a few days since I've posted anything here..whoops! I've been busy working on RPGamer stuff (actual journalism). I did training earlier in the week and have also written two news pieces for them. Very exciting! I've also done some gaming in there somehow...

So I recently beat God of War: Ghost of Sparta for the PSP. It was a pretty short game (~7 hours) but perfect for on the go gaming. I'm still deciding what review I want to do but it'll probably be GoW or possibly Persona 4. We shall see!

I also had the time to get back into an RPG: Xenogears. My friends that have played this game have done nothing but rave about it. I'm about 10.5 hours in and it's pretty good so far. There are so many unanswered questions! It makes for engaging gameplay though because you want to know what happens next.

I also have been DOMINATING (for me) on Madden 2011 online. I've won like...7 games in a row or something. No one can stop Tom Brady. Anyways thanks as always for reading. Follow the links below to check out my latest articles for RPGamer. Later  Gamers!

Check out the trailer below to get a preview of what Zero is capable in the game.

New Page and New Position

Hello Loyal Readers,
I have some extremely exciting news! First off I added a Reviews Page to make it quicker to find old reviews for those who want to read up on a game. Secondly I just received an email regarding a position at the brand new Blistered Thumbs website. They want to bring me on for a trial period for a possible permanent position!

Now this may or may not be paid but apparently THOUSANDS applied for these positions. To even have made it this far and to have the people at Channel Awesome like my work this much is a true honor and blessing. Praise be to God! I am extremely grateful, humbled, and shocked. It still hasn't quite hit me yet.

To be totally honest I'm not sure what I want to continue doing with this blog. I may revert it back to a personal gaming blog again. Either way a new review is definitely coming soon. Thanks again to those who read this. Very much appreciated. Have a great week everyone!

Update and New Position!

Hello loyal readers,

I have a few updates I wanted to share. I won't be posting anything today because I recently got a position  writing for RPGamer.com! I've been doing paperwork and training for them. Hopefully in the next week or so I'll be posting for them. I will continue to write here as well but today was a little busy and I started a little too late in the day.

I'm also considering doing this in video format to spice things up (not to mention monetize a little bit :P). Let me know what you think of that! Also look for a new review this week at some point as well. Possibly the new God of War: Ghost of Sparta or Batman: Arkham Asylum. Trying to break the mold and do something besides RPGs. Thanks for reading as always. Later Gamers!

Vaan the latest Dissia Duodecim character announced

Among the latest characters announced for the new Dissidia game is Final Fantasy XII's Vaan. He joins the cast along FF7's Tifa and FF13's Lightning. Of all the possible characters that could have been chosen Vaan does seem like a questionable addition.

Vaan ranks down there with the most hated characters such as Tidus. Basch would have been a more suitable choice, or hell even Caith Sith would have at least been fun to laugh at. One good things about adding Vaan though....gamers will have the chance to beat him to death!

CoD: Black Ops topples Modern Warfare 2

It's being reported by numerous sources that CoD: Black Ops smashed the launch sales of last years Modern Warfare 2. MW2 sold 4.7 million units at launch accumulating $310 Million in sales in North America and the UK. Black Ops has reportedly pulled in $360 Million on launch day selling 5.6 million copies of the game in North America and the UK. This makes Black Ops the best selling entertainment launch in history, video game or otherwise.

Black Ops comes loaded with content as this years Call of Duty game. It includes: An 8-10 hour campaign, robust online options, robust multi-player options, as well as a top down shooter mini game (which could probably sell for $10 on its own). All in all gamers continue to see CoD as worthy of the full $60 retail price. Black Ops is trending to become the best selling game of all time.

Call of Duty: Future Warfare?

Fans who have long awaited a future-themed Call of Duty game may need to start thanking the gaming gods. Your prayers may finally have been answered. Based on recent domain name registrations by Activision one of the following might be the name of the 2011 Call of Duty game: "Future Warfare", "Space Warfare", "Secret Warfare", "Advanced Warfare".

Rumor has it the next CoD game will include Space Marines and be set in the distant future. What else could possibly be in store? Space Combat? Aliens? Mechs? Only time will tell what's ahead for this series as it takes a leap into the final frontier.

New SSX Possibly on the Horizon

It's been quite some time since gamers have hand a new SSX game to pull off 1080 stalefishes with, approximatively 3 years to be exact. Fans of the series should start dusting off their boards because a new SSX game is possibly in the works.

EA has recently registered the following domain names: "SSX First Decent" and "SSX Deadly Decent." EA has made no announcement in any detail about the new title(s) but it's always fun to speculate! Let's hope the domain
 names =  new snowboarding action.

Okamiden Release Date Announced

Those who have been waiting patiently for a release date to Okamiden finally have a date to mark on their calendars. Capcom has announced the DS title will be available in North America March 15 as well as releasing the cover art (shown to the left).

Capcom stated that those who pre-order the game from Gamestop will receive a special paintbrush-shaped stylus as well as a screen cleaning cloth with art from the game. Fans eager for the bonuses should make their pre-orders soon because only 20,000 units will be produced for the promotion.

New Playstation Home Features Leaked

A number of images were leaked from the beta testing for the PS3 virtual world, Home. The 1.4 Home update leak appears to have a number of new features that are going to be available. An apparent one is a new PDA system that will allow users to modify their avatars features (clothing, accessories, etc) and navigate through menus quicker than before. There also appears to be a new status feature that may appear on a friends list that will tell people their current mood (and possibly avatar facial features to match the mood?). One last leaked feature is the availability to purchase a lizard pet, which seems to roam around on it's own.

Sony made a statement about the new update this past weekend only saying that the update will include improved voice chat and wardrobe features. Obviously more than that is in store for the update.

Sony did make a statement about the update saying it will have an "enormous impact on users and developers alike." No official release date has be announced.

Will the PSP2 ever see the light of day?

Rumors having been swirling for years that a new more powerful PSP might hit the market. It was rumored that the PSP2 might make an appearance at one of the various game conventions throughout the year. But as E3 and TGS passed by with no PSP2 sighting, it seems less likely the device will hit the market any time soon.

Although Sony refuses to address the rumors about the device even existing, various studio executives claim to have laid eyes on the device. When asked by gaming site CVG whether he had "any exposure at all" to the supposed PSP2, EA senior vice president Patrick Soderlund replied by saying "Well, obviously as a developer we have had that." But followed up by saying "I'm not allowed to talk about it." Mortal Kombat executive producer Shaun Himmerick has also admitted to having the device "in house."

The picture above is only an artists rendering but it stems from these supposed specs: A higher resolution screen, larger display, dual analog sticks, a rear-facing touch pad, and 1GB of RAM (double that of the XBOX 360).

One has to wonder if Sony is intentionality allowing these leaks to happen or just blowing smoke with the questionable PSP Phone. Possibly these 2 devices could be one in the same? Either way the anticipation is reaching it's breaking point for any legitimate word from Sony. Solid Snake might need to be sent in to divulge the truth!

Persona 2: Innocent Sin coming to the PSP

Atlas has announced that they plan on releasing an enhanced port of Persona 2: Innocent Sin to the PSP in Japan in early 2011. For fans unfamiliar with the title, Innocent Sin was one part of a dual sequel that took place in the same world as Persona 2:Eternal Punishment that was released in June of 1999. Gamers in North America might be unfamiliar with the title because it was only released in Japan. However, Persona 2: Eternal Punishment was released in North America in November of 2000.

Although Eternal Punishment picks up a few months after Innocent Sin, it takes place in a parallel world where the events of Innocent Sin did not occur. All the same characters are the in the game, however they do not know one another.

It wasn't stated whether or not Innocent Sin would make it overseas, but based on the recent release of Persona 3: Portable fans shouldn't lose hope that an enhanced port will eventually make its way to North America. P3P garnered such rave reviews, a Metacritic score of 91, that it seems unlikely Atlas will pass up the opportunity to bring the game outside of Japan.

Stay tuned until more updates are available. Until then check out the opening cinema to Innocent Sin.

Update and My Mission!

Hello readers,
As I'm sure you read earlier in the week that I applied to be a lead editor at the new Blistered Thumbs website. In preparation to do so I needed to write 3 new articles as well as 2 reviews. They have been submitted and I am waiting their response!

But I come to you today for a bit of a different reason. I truly hope to get the lead PSP editor position at Blistered Thumbs. But if I don't I want to continue practicing writing reviews and news posts in hopes to get picked up by another gaming news outlet.

With that being said I will take it upon myself to carry on the duties here as I would have on the Blistered Thumbs site: At least 2 news pieces a day Mon.-Fri. and at least 2 reviews per month. I want to continue to keep people updated on gaming news that matters, stay up to date in the industry, as well as hone my skills. I know I'm not perfect and have a long way to go but I feel I have the talent to be a solid contributor as a gaming journalist.

So I ask you the reader for any feedback possible! Whether it's a way to improve my writing, specific games/ news you want to hear, or just general constructive criticism. I want to be great and I'll do what it takes to get there. I will post my articles via Facebook so you can follow me through Facebook or subscribe to my RSS feed.

Thanks to the 10 or so who have read my stuff so far =D. You'll be in elite company as my earliest readers once I do this professionally. Thanks again and hope you have a great week. Later Gamers!

Square Enix looking to make Aya their next Tifa

Based on recent reveals from Square-Enix, it looks like they're trying ramp up the sex appeal of 3rd Birthday's Hotty Heroine Aya Brea. In past games Aya had sported heavy police-wear, but in this latest sequel Aya has been shown in everything from FF13's Lighting's outfit and as well as this seductive "office suit." The Parasite Eve franchise is continuing to change in areas from gameplay to now a variety of costumes (which are are looking pretty sweet!).

The game previously had gameplay mechanics which can only be described as "Final Fantasy meets Resident Evil." Now, in attempts to conform to the ever expanding shooter market, 3rd Birthday is going to employee more of a 3rd person shooter mechanic. This change in combat should make for a better experience overall considering how archaic the previous P.E. battle systems are by today's standards.

Overall fans have many reason to be excited for this upcoming PSP title. And if Tifa Lockhart doesn't watch herself Aya Brea might just pass her up as the hottest chick in gaming (Although Tifa probably has a strangle hold on the amount of fan fic =D).

3rd Birthday hits shelves in Japan December 22nd and later next year in North America. Until then, here are some tantalizing pieces of advertising to hold you over!

Sony looking to gain Upperhand with the Playstation Phone

Nintendo might by the leading game company for now, but they better keep their eyes on Sony. The same could be said for Apple and their iPhone. If what Engadget.com reported is true, then Sony may take the lead as the industry's leading company.

It's being reported that a Playstation Phone is on the way, possibly as soon as the holiday season. It would be running the Android 3.0 interface and special Sony marketplace would be set up for downloadable games, apps, etc exclusive to the Phone.

If this phone does in fact hit the market this year it would be a gamers wet dream come true. Up until now the iPhone was the ultimate mobile device. But at times simple iPhone games aren't enough to match up to games from the PSP or the DS. Now gamers won't have to compromise. They will have the convenience of a Smart Phone and the game playing ability of a PSP.

First, Sony beat out Microsoft by being the only next-gen device to play Blue Rays, then started competing with Microsoft and Nintendo by putting out the Eye Toy and Playstation Move, now they look to put a stranglehold on the market by being the only company with a Phone/ Legit Gaming device in one. Time will only tell what becomes of this latest move.

Capcom Legend Rocks the Gaming World

The man that is largely to thank for Capcom being where it is today, Keiji Itafune, has stated via his personal blog that he will be leaving Capcom at the end of October. Itafune, who has been part of Capcom for 23 years, had a large hand in the creations of such classic franchises as: Onimusha, Dead Rising, and Mega Man.

In his posting, translated by Andriasang, he states, "It would probably be good for me to sit gracefully in this seat and become a leading figure in the industry. However, I cannot do this. Settling down means death for a creator. As long as you are a creator, you cannot settle down."

He went on to talk about Capcom by saying," Capcom is truly a good company...I love Capcom. Probably more than anyone in the world. However, it’s not always the case that your hopes are realized. Just as it was with the girlfriend I loved long ago."

One has to wonder if his recent poorly received projects, the loosely related Dead Rising mini series and the laughable Mega Man Universe demo, had anything to do with his exit.

In any event Keiji Itafune is a legend that left a stamp on the industry forever. Let's hope this isn't the last we've seen of him.

War of the Lions: The perfect port of a gaming classic

The original Final Fantasy Tactics on the PS1 was a big hit and a welcomed departure from the series: It was a complete change in game play with a masterfully told story. Now nine years later comes a remastered port to the portable console with a few additions. Are these additions worth a look, or is War of the Lions simply a quick cash in? And for those who never had the chance to play the original, is it worth picking up for the first time? Let's take a deeper look and find out.

Gameplay:
Despite the title of "Final Fantasy" this isn't your typical turn based battle system. The battle system is more reminiscent of Tactics Ogre or older Front Mission games. The battled field is broken up into many small squares that can only be occupied by one character at a time. It's also a turn-based system so one character or enemy goes at a time; they are each allowed one movement and one action per turn unless otherwise hindered or amplified by a magic spell or ability. There is no time limit so the battles end when either sides forces are completely vanquished.

This system allows for massive strategy and customization due the varied landscapes in battle and the extremely deep job system. The job system is 21 classes deep allowing to start your character as either a Chemist, the base for magic using classes, or a Squire, the base for melee heavy classes. As you level your characters you can either choose to stick with one class and maximize it to have say the best Knight in all of Ivalice, or mix and match abilities and have a Wizard wearing Heavy Armor.

The battles and customization of your characters are basically all the gameplay there is. There is no walking around towns per say, you simply follow roads on the map from town to town. But you will have so much fun playing around with the various abilities trying to make your ultimate force of butt kickers! There are literally ENDLESS number of combos for classes and abilities. You'll want to try to get other classes just to see if they have abilities you'll want to use.  It's extremely gratifying to see the group you make go to work in battle and destroy enemies exactly the way you planed!

This system also allows for high amounts of replay as you can try other class combos and abilities to see if they fit your strategy better. In this particular version of Final Fantasy Tactics there are two new classes they added: The Onion Knight and the Dark Knight. To put it bluntly the Onion Knight is useless: Its only unique ability is it can use every weapon in the game. The Dark Knight is by far the best class, but also the most difficult to get. The Dark Knight has the ability the drain life from a distance, on top of performing devastating AOE attacks from a distance. It is a challenge to get one but having a Dark Knight is well worth the time.

There are also 2 new special characters from other Final Fantasy titles that are playable in the game. The first being Luso form Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced 2 who acts as a Beast Master. The 2nd being the cocky sky pirate Balthier from Final Fantasy 12 who acts as a dual class: A Thief/ Chemist.
Sound:
There is quite a lot that has changed in the sound department of this port. As always the music is heartwarming and magical. There are plenty of tunes that make you feel relaxed and at ease. They are expertly scored and fit well with the theme and time of the story. There are also plenty of intense battle themes as well. You will definitely walk away from this game remembering a handful of songs and wanting to purchase the soundtrack.

One cool addition to this game was voice acting. In the original port of the game all the cut scenes were simply in text form. It worked well and didn't take anything away from the game. In War of the Lions all the story cut scenes are animated with great voice acting. They speak in old English so it can be hard to decipher what they're trying to say at times, but all in all it fits the mood and setting of the game and adds a new dimension to the game that the original installment didn't have. It helps the player better relate to the characters in a way that is hard to when you're reading text from sprites. With motion animation and voices it makes the characters more organic and really brings them to life.

Graphics.
By today's standards these graphics are completely outdated and even unplayable to some. The sprites are detailed enough though to keep players engaged in the battles. Whats nice is that the graphics for the various weapons will change as you upgrade your gear, however the armor will stay the same.

The graphics that really stand out in this port are from the beautifully hand-drawn animated cut scenes. As mentioned before, they add new life to the game that keep the player more engaged and have a stronger bond with the characters. These cut scenes also have a filter on them that gives the impression they are being show on an old piece of parchment as well as the lines you might often scene in the early days of cinematography.

When it comes down to it, the graphics aren't stunning, but have a charm that can't be matched. After awhile players won't even notice them because how involved they will be with the game.

Story:
This is the aspect that takes center stage for this game. It it widely regarded as one of the best RPG stories ever told, and with good reason.

As the main protagonist you play as Ramza Beoulve, the son in a well respected upper-class family. The story starts off with Ramza as a Knight in training in the middle of a War. The War, nick named "The Lion War" because of the two opposing leaders, began over who would become the true heir to the crown. As Ramza sees his brothers greedy ways he decides to strike out on his own as a vigilante of sorts doing what he thinks is right for the good of the country.

Without giving too much away, various other factors become intertwined within the war to make for a complicated but masterfully told story. You know when the likes of the Church, Zodiac monsters, and the rise of a simple peasant to Knighthood are involved its destined for greatness. The story of The War of the Lions is one Fantasy you won't soon be forgetting.

Final Thoughts: Play It
Whether you are wanting to play this for the first time or are a fan of the original, Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions is well worth it. The battle and job systems respectively are deep and fun. There is a ton of variety and plenty of room for different approaches to each battle. Whatever style you like to play there will be some job combo that you will find appealing and fun to battle with.

The translation has been much improved from the original as well. This is the definitive version of the story you want to experience. With the animated cut scenes, corrected character and city names it makes for an easier to understand and enjoyable story.

This makes for the perfect portable game. You can pick it up, play a battle, and put it away for another day. Don't let the fact that it's a portable game fool you though. The game can take well over 30-40 hours or more if you do all the side missions. If you're a fan of strategy or RPG games you will love War of the Lions. If you haven't picked it up yet you need to go to your local Game Stop now! You won't regret it, nor will you be putting this game down anytime soon.

Suikoden: No One's Trying to Take Over the World!

Shocking isn't it? It's the biggest cliché of the genre: The main antagonist trying to take over the world ("Of Course!"). The story of this game is more reminiscent of the Final Fantasy Tactics story. It's more politically driven with a bigger emphasis on larger scale battles. That's not to say this game is boring by any means. It is a unique specimen that I thoroughly enjoyed. That being said here are my thoughts on Suikoden.

Just as a little disclaimer, I'm going to change the style of reviews to a combination of my last 2 and my 1st. More about my thoughts on the game as I played it, like Grandia, but still telling you the details that matter.

So as I started playing one thing stood out to me, as it will for most people, namely the graphics are not much better than Super Nintendo graphics. Granted, they are better than Lunar, but not by much. The nice thing about this though is that  it makes everything look really crisp. Every part of what you see on the screen is a pixel and nothing is pre-rendered. I particularly enjoyed this sprite-esc design to the game and it fit well overall.

The one thing I hate about certain RPGs plagued this particular game. That being that the main character never talks outside of when you have to make a choice in certain dialog scenarios. In some games it might not matter, but in Suikoden your character is the Commander of a rebel army (spoiler!) so him talking seems like it would be important. Instead, you have a characters that act like your right hand men/ supervisors and the you just select agree or disagree with them. The story moves along fine without your character talking, but it would have been nice if he talked.

As I traveled through different towns, forests, and dungeons I really fell in love with the music and ambient sounds. It sets a nice tone for the various locations. The music is really solid up and down. It's nice because they don't often re-use tracks so everything seems unique. Also, sometimes there isn't even music it's just sounds. For example, theres a forest you walk through and instead of music its sounds of birds chirping. Makes it feel like a nice and relaxing setting.

One main feature of the game I thought was really cool was your fortress. At one point in the game your crew is getting big so you need a home base of sorts. You find this abandoned castle at sea and claim it as your own. It's cool because as you accumulate members to your army the fortress gets upgraded. You find people in the world that want to join the resistance and feel like they have something to share. For example, a former blacksmith, inn owner, even bath house maker. So you don't have to waste to traveling everywhere after you add these people. You can rest, upgrade items, learn new skills, and relax in the hot bath all in one place! It makes the experience smoother and you don't have to waste time running to various town.

The battles in the game are different and varied as well. There are three types: Normal turn based battles but with up to 6 members, larger scale army battles, and also 1 on 1 duel battles. All require some thought and strategy. I actually had to re-do certain battles multiple times because they were quite challenging.

The 6 man battles do require a bit of strategy, mainly in how you arrange your party. The front 3 members will essentially act as tanks while the back three will act as the damage dealers and cant be attacked except with long range or AOE (Area of Effect). Each character also has a limit to their attack range. So sometimes a character that wouldn't be good as a tank has short range and is forced to be put in the front.

The army battles aren't quite as epic as it might sound. Essentially each army has a troop count and can perform one type of attack per round:Arrows, Magic, and Charge. Each attack has a weakness so you either have to be a lucky guess or have a few spies that tell you the enemies next attack.

In the duel battles each character gets a health bar and its pretty much a guessing game. You either attack, defend, or do a desperate attack. It's simple but again takes a bit of thinking.

I will say the one thing that bugged about battles is that you are often forced to include certain characters in your party. I had this dream group that I wanted to make, but never had the opportunity because I had to keep using characters involved in the story. Granted, they were strong but I still would have liked the option. Just don't get your hopes too high because you're dream party may never become a reality.

Final Thoughts: PLAY IT

The game might seem daunting with its various battle types and the fact that it boasts having 108 recruitable characters. However, the story and gameplay is paced really well so you never get overwhelmed or confused. It's very clear where you're supposed to go and what you're supposed to do next. All things considered this was also a pretty short game. I finished it in around 18 hours.

It was surprising to me considering that I took my time level grinding, getting extra characters, and making sure my party was optimally equipped each time I had to change members. So if you want to play something a little different and not spend too much time doing it then Suikoden is right up your alley. It's also only $5.99 on the PlayStation network so it's well worth your money.

Until I get back in the states I'm probably going to hold off on reviews since I don't have any more games at my disposal. I'll keep writing articles though and more will come as we update the new site. Take care. Later gamers!

Recent Purchase

So a week or two ago I went on a spending binge and I bought a good amount of games to add to my collection. Now the picture to the side isn't one of my games, but it might as well be. I have 17/30 games shown in the picture. The only difference is mine are ALL black label =). In fact I went on such a binge that my bank froze my  card because they thought it had been stolen. The person I talked with on the phone recommended setting up a second account just for ebay buying to prevent my card from being frozen. I didn't even know such a thing existed. I think she was just trying to set me up with another account.

Anyways here is the list of game I scooped up: Breath of Fire 3+4, Dragon Valor, Eternal Eyes, FF Anthology+Origins, Jade Cocoon, Kartia, Lunar 2, Rhapsody, Shadow Madness, Tales of Destiny, and Thousand Arms. I got so many because a good chunk of these were $15 or under being sold by the same guy with FREE SHIPPING. So I gobbled 'em all up before someone else did!

Now with that said I have a lot to go, including most of the expensive ones (Suikoden II, Tales 2, the Personas, etc). I also decided to include 2 more games to the grand total list to make it 70 games. Those 2 games being Brigandine and FF Tactics. They were on so many lists and I'm probably going to buy Brigandine eventually (I own FFT) so I thought why not.

Well that's all the updates for now. Look for the Suikoden review soon as well as the launch of the new design for the blog. Thanks for reading. Later Gamers!

Updates and Upgrades!

So yeah it's been awhile since my last post, but there has been some cool stuff going on! My friend Nick decided to make a full on site with a pretty neat banner to give the blog a face lift. We're moving everything over to the new site that's relevant. The interface should be more user friendly and allows a wider variety of options to display content.

There is still the Suikoden review coming as well as a massive update on games I've purchased. So stay tuned for all kinds of cool stuff coming soon. Also let us know what you would like to read/ see. More reviews, opinions, RPG related youtube videos, or something else entirely?

We're looking forward to bringing you awesome RPG related content and hope you continue to check the blog daily. Later Gamers!

Updates and Review Coming soon

Sorry that I haven't posted in a little while. I recently beat Suikoden, a bit abruptly It was way shorter than I expected, especially considering how much extra work I put into side quests and outfitting my party. It's less than 20 hours, but was enjoyable. Also, I recently purchased Lunar Silver Star Story Complete for the PS1. Yeah that's right, the big huge box with all the extras. I'm looking forward to unwrapping that!

Thanks for reading and stay tuned for a Suikoden review soon. Later Gamers!

Started Suikoden

So I started Suikoden recently and I have to say it's a welcome change from Wild Arms. Random battles are quick, fun, and now have up to 6 party members. It's different from any RPG I've played before for a few reasons. One reason being that you can recruit up to 108 members in your Squad. You're character is the leader of a resistance Army and you have your own Castle where all your recruits live. Not all of them are used in battle however, some start item shops,Inn's, or  bath houses in the castle. It's pretty fun to start recruiting people and see your castle fill out.

This game also seems pretty story driven, which is a little different but still entirely enjoyable. Also, you know exactly where you're supposed to go! Being that you are a Commander of sorts, your next move obviously needs to be very clear cut. I'm about 5 hours in and have really only come across one legitimate "Boss Battle". I'm sure there's more and even a different large scale battle, but I haven't played any yet. More updates as they come.

Also I just wanted to share a little something about Digital Downloads. There's talk that in the future all games will be digital downloads and Companies will do away with tangible Discs. It seems good in theory and will save on costs, but I've run into two problems with that recently. One, it eliminates collectability. I've sure developers could care less about that, but there is something to seeing a big stack of games collected on your shelf. With DDs that will cease to exist. Also, if the game has any glitches you're screwed. It's not like you can clean the disc or blow in the cartridge. I recently bought the DD(Digital Download) or Resident Evil 3 and I got to this part where the game screen goes black and won't progress. Nice. I wasted $6 on a game I can't finish. I contacted Capcom and they said they're worked on the issue. What if this happens with new release games? I'm sitting here with a glitchy game and can't do a damn thing about it. I hope thats not what happens because me recent experience makes me think it's a bad idea. We'll see what the future of gaming holds in store. Thanks for reading, later gamers!

Wild Arms: Final Thoughts

After a long weekend of re-doing boss fights, looking up guides, and actually having a little bit of fun I finally finished the game! I know in a lot of my previous posts I have given this game a really hard time, but as I write this I want to try to be as fair as possible. I recently found out this was only 1 of maybe 5 RPGs that came out on the PS1 before Final Fantasy 7. So this game really was innovative for the time and probably seemed really original. Unfortunately I'm a bit biased since I played this game post- FF7. With all this said it's time to lay down my thoughts and tell you what I think of the game.

Gameplay:
To be totally honest the game-play in this game is actually really unique. Not only for it's time but overall. The way you explore dungeons, upgrade abilities, build up to "limit-break" esc abilities is like nothing I've seen in an RPG before (outside of the sequels for this game).

As far as abilities go, each of the 3 characters you control in the game have their own unique way to level up their abilities. Cecilia uses magic and you don't simply start off with magic abilities. You find these items throughout the game called "Crest Graphs". You take these Crest Graphs to magic shops and they will exchange them for spells essentially. The more you find the more varied your spell arsenal becomes. Later in the game you can also find a "Secret Shop" that allows you to purchase higher level spells. Rudy has guns which are named ARMS in the game. You can find various ARMS and upgrade their stats, such as: Attack Power, Accuracy, and Ammunition. Lastly, Jack as any array of attacks called Fast Draw. He discovers them through the game either in story events or side quests. The battles themselves aren't anything too special. It's pretty much your basic turn based battle.

One really fun aspect of the game are the characters' various Tools. Each character will eventually acquire 4 tools. Each one has a different puzzle solving purpose. Maybe it's Jacks' lighter to make fires, Cecilias' canister to put out a fire, or Rudys bombs to blow things up. Now I've never seen a puzzle-solving dynamic this fun or unique. It makes the puzzles not only challenging but really fun. It makes you think how you can utilize these tools in unique ways. It also leaves you really satisfied when you finally figure out some of the more challenging ones.

The one thing that really did bug me is that there were WAY too many random battles, especially in dungeons. Just when your about to figure a section of a puzzle out theres a battle. It also can take like 7 attempts to run away at times.  Then after the battle you cant remember if you took a certain path already and end up wasting time back tracking.

Sound:
Personally, the sound of this game didn't wow me in any way. I can't remember any music from the game outside of the battle music, and thats only because i heard it every 30 seconds. The sound effects are okay I guess. They go with the game and add life to it. I wish I could write more here, but the sound in this game is just forgettable. There weren't any moments in the game where I really wanted to go find that song on youtube or anything. The only song that was the least bit intriguing to me was the ending sequence. It's got a soft acoustic guitar feel to it. it's calming and fits the scene well. Other than that, I think you'll live if you never buy the soundtrack to this game.

Graphics:
Like I mentioned before, this was Pre-FF7 so not much can be expected. The characters look extremely blocky, which was common in early on in the first fully 3D consoles such as the PlayStation. But to be totally honest I don't really mind it that much. That's the era that brought me into gaming and those kind of graphics are endearing in away. There's a certain charm to it and brings me back to the good ol' days.

The spell and attacks effects are basic but work well with what they're trying to do. There are really no pre-rendered backgrounds like in Final Fantasies. The building and world map graphics are pretty similar to the characters graphics which kind of adds a wholeness to the game. But the one thing that kills the game aesthetically for me is practically everything is earth toned. The towns, dungeons, and castles are all a shade of brown, green, or gray. The only real color we get is in the characters' costumes. Cecilia has a bit of pink, Rudy has a red shirt and blue hair. Overall it's just kind of ugly to look at.

I guess you can say it adds to the feeling of the game, like its supposed to put you in the setting of that time. But I just find it unappealing. Also I have to add, where is this "Wild West" theme that seems to follow the series? It certainly didn't start here because there is nothing remotely Western about this game. There are Knights in Armor, Kings, and Demons. The game never even hints at it being remotely Wild West esc.

Story:
The game starts in a really odd way actually. You start the game separately with each character until they each find their way to Adlehyde. They all meet in this town and decide to travel together. After your first quest, finally the opening title sequence rolls. When this happened I had two thoughts: This is either the shortest game ever or I just got a game over somehow. It turns out this is when the game really starts.

So the story essentially revolves around Jack , Rudy, and Cecilia stopping the world from falling apart (in more ways than one). Demons have been in Felgaia for sometime are about to take over. The world loses hope in itself and the guardians of the planet cease to exist. The 3 heroes travel around trying to restore hope in the world and the spirits of the guardians to help defeat the demons. At least I think this is the plot....It was pretty hard to follow and I couldn't really get into it.

You go off on side quests that are part of the main game that deviate you from the main story for hours at a time. The story seems to just go all over the place for me. One thing that this game did that I really hate in RPGs is that Rudy, essentially the one main character, has no dialog. Why? Chrono Cross did this and so did Legend of Legaia if I'm not mistaken. I hate it. You never get to know what the character is like, you're just told instead of experiencing it. Most of the dialog is kind of cheesy and the revelations the characters have just seem forced. There isn't a lot of build up. In a good story the story arcs make sense and there events that correlate to why they happen. In Wild Arms it just seems to happen only to serve the purpose of moving along the story as opposed to it coming to fruition based on past events.

Finally, the one HUGE thing that killed the game for me was not knowing where you're supposed to go. There are an uncountable amount of times where you either need to collect something, kill a monster, etc. After you complete the task and the event following, nothing happens. You are just expected to walk around and talk to everyone in town and towns you've been to before to figure out where to go next. You could play this game for probably close to 80 hours just because you'd be wondering around helplessly trying to figure out what to do next. There are even ESSENTIAL items to completing this game that aren't given to you as part of an event in the main story. You have to find them on your own.

Here is the best example I have of this (*WARNING SPOILER ALERT! SKIP TO THE NEXT PARAGRAPH IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS.). At one point in the game you un-earth an ancient Golem and eventually bring it back to life. You can also you it as vehicle to cross certain terrain you can't cross with any other vehicle in the game. Well how to do you summon the Golem? You need an Ocarina. Where is this Ocarina, does someone give it to you or tell you where it is? Who knows and of course not! First, you have to find a secluded house in the forest that has no visible game graphic on the world map until you're on top of it and it says "Forgotten Ruins". If that's not bad enough, you have to walk around a house to find it. Once you play the ocarina, only then can you summon the Golem and ride it. How cryptic is that? The Golem is so essential that you can't enter the final dungeon of the game without it. That is just plain ridiculous. I would have never figured that out without a guide.

Final Thoughts: Don't Play It
All things considering (price on the PlatStation Network of $5.99, fun puzzle solving, and nostalgic graphics) this game should be worth a play through right? Maybe. But I personally can't recommend it. The puzzles are fun, really fun, but it just doesn't save the game from how cryptic it is. There are parts in the game that are down right agonizing to figure out without a guide. I personally used one for a good majority of the game. I wanted to finish it to see the whole thing and I was pretty sure I never would without a guide. The game is just difficult for the wrong reasons.

The fact that the game rarely explains what to do next is annoying to me. Some might see it as a challenge but it takes away too much from the game for me. I'm also recalling a few puzzles near the end of the game and am baffled at how anyone is supposed to figure them out. Even in the guide it says "if you didn't know where to look this would be difficult for you to get." The fact that I had to switch online walkthroughs is a testament to the difficulty and crypticness of this game. As I was looking for images and screen shots I was reading comments about the game and most of them said something like "This game was awesome! But I got stuck and never finished it..." So unless you like extreme challenges or plain don't mind using a walkthrough then I'd say avoid this game. It's not worth the headache and the ending isn't too satisfying either.

For my next game...I think I'm going to avoid playing Wild Arms 2 for awhile haha. So that pretty much leaves Suikoden. I might hold off on playing it for a bit considering how much of a chore Wild Arms was. Thanks again for reading everyone. Spread the word and share this blog with your friends who enjoy games or just want something interesting to read. Later Gamers!

Collection Update & New Review Coming Soon

Over the weekend I found some good deals on a few games. Those games being Dragon Warrior VII and Wild Arms 1&2. I've played Dragon Warrior VIII for the PS2 but not 7, so I'm interested to see if it's as enjoyable. It's apparently the best selling PS1 RPG in Japan (even above Final Fantasy 7) so it must be half-way decent.

Also, I just beat Wild Arms 1 about an hour ago so look for a review of it in the next few days. It might seem silly to essentially buy the same game twice, but the way I look at it is this: I'll have the game on two platforms. I can have my Wild Arms on the go or sit down on a console. The combined price for a virtual download and hard copy is less than half the price when it was brand new. Lastly, I just want to have the hard copy as a collectors item.

Anyways, thanks for reading as always. Once I get back to the states I want to start doing videos so spread the word if you think anyone would be interested in this sort of thing. I know Shanna has it in her RSS feed to share so thanks for that! Well I hope you all have a great finish to your weekend everyone. Later Gamers!

Oh the games I lost...

So I just wanted to share a sad story about games I had and lost. As you know I'm trying to build up my game collection, but I cringe at the games I had lost to a move or other factors. I had to re-buy 3 Final Fantasies that I use to have, thankfully for a discounted price. I also use to have games like the original Resident Evil and 3, Saga Frontier 2, Star Ocean 2, Tales of Destiny (which is pretty pricey now), and the one that hurts the most...Suikoden II. This is the most sought after game for the PS1 and is valued anywhere between $120-$300. AKK =P.

But what's done is done and I can't change anything. I'm looking forward to all the new games I'm buying up that I never got a chance to play. I'm also close to finishing Wild Arms (I think?) so look for a review sometime soon.  Have a great weekend everyone. Later Gamers!

New Game to the Collection!

The collection is getting bigger slowly but surely! This week I won an auction for the highly valued Valkyire Profile. It's apparently one of the more expensive games for the PS1. I never played it and honestly know nothing about it haha. But I soon will! Looking forward to playing this game. Let me know if you've played this game and if it's any good. Later Gamers!

Woah....what happened?

So last post I'm talking about how I hated Wild Arms....like almost 20 hours in theres a HUGE plot twist and also sheds light on the name of the game. It may be 20 hours too late but it's re-energized my interest in this game. I actually care about the plot! We'll see if it's enough to save the game....

Also, I'm currently the highest bidder for Suikoden 2 and Valkyrie Profile , 2 of the rarest RPGs for the PS1, in a few ebay auctions. Crossing my fingers for no one raising the bids! Thanks for reading. Later Gamers!

God I hate Wild Arms

I've never seen an RPG, or game for that matter, like this. IT NEVER TELLS YOU WHAT TO DO NEXT! Usually in a good RPG it explains that the character needs to go to location X to do Y. But in Wild Arms you complete the event and that's it. No further dialog. You just explore around forever until you happen to stumble upon the next event in the game.

I got so sick of it and started using an online guide. If I never used it I'd probably still be roaming around and most likely would have stopped playing it. Whatever amount of hours it boasts to have is probably true. I'm around 16 hours or so in, but who knows how close I am to finishing it.

There are parts that thoroughly perplex me how someone is supposed to figure out without a guide. There are essential areas you need to go to that have no visible icon. There only invisible until you get close enough and then it reveals the name of the town/ dungeon. You also have to talk to random people in towns for the next part of the story to start up. Like a random guy in the bar, a mayor, etc. The crypticness knows no end!

It seriously isn't even fun anymore. Also, there are WAY too many random battles. I just wanna finish the damn thing!  The puzzles are still fun, but man the whole game feels like one big puzzle.

What do I do next? Who knows!

First Purchase and Crazy Ebay Auction

Hello everyone. I'm still playing through Wild Arms, about 9 hours in now. It's continuing to frustrate me but I must press on! Anyways I wanted to tell you that I've been looking on Ebay recently I made my first purchase towards completing my collection. I saw a bundle deal of Final Fantasy 8,9, and 10. It was priced lower than other auctions for just FF8 so I snagged it before someone else did!

I'm not looking to dink and dunk games one by one right now, just bundle packages that come with a lot of games or a reasonably good price. When I get back to the states I'll start looking into it more seriously. That's all the updates for now, but I did want to share a hilariously over-priced auction for Final Fantasy 7. Now I realize people might go crazy for the black disc factory seal, but take a look at this....
Um....good luck trying to sell that buddy. So if anyone sees a good deal while browsing a store or the internet let me know! Thanks for reading. Later Gamers!

Decided on Wild Arms, First Impression

First off, I changed the margins a bit to the blog. Before it was way too narrow and just unappealing. Since I tend to write a lot I figured this would be better. Let me know if you like this set up.

On to the games...So I ultimately decided on Wild Arms 1 as my next game to play. Before even playing it I thought it would have more of a "Wild West" theme to it. It has about as much of a Wild West theme to it as Final Fantasy Tactics does. One guy has a gun that they call an "Arm". That's about as Wild West as it gets, so far.

The one thing that I REALLY like about the game so far is the action puzzle-solving dynamic. There are three playable characters each with their own unique tool to use in the game. One has bombs to blow up walls, boxes, etc. One has a lighter to light candles and set things on fire as well as a pet that can move long range to hit switches. Lastly, there is a girl that has a clock that can move back time. Outside of reseting a puzzle it's kind of a pointless tool so far.

Overall the graphics are okay. They're kind of blocky in the battles, but  remind me a lot of Harvest Moon characters. The back grounds are nice, but everything seems to have an earth tone to it which is a bit ugly a times. I just would like some more color.

The battle system is typical. Turn based system with each character having unique abilities to level. Although each characters' abilities can be customized and upgraded. Rudy has a gun that you can customize by adding a  bigger clip size, more power, or more accuracy. Cecilia uses magic and when you obtain a "graph" item you take it to the magic shop to create a new spell. It's cool because after you create it you have the option to re-name it if you want. So far it remains to be seen if Jack's attacks are customizable.

The last thing that I want to say that's pretty annoying so far is not knowing where to go. After an event is complete and your obviously supposed to go somewhere else the game is never clear about it. You  have to explore around forever, asking people and just picking up the hints about where to go next. I guess this can be seen as challenging, but after Lunar where it's very clear where to go next it's just a bit frustrating. To make matters worse there is an open world map like Final Fantasies as opposed to Lunar where the only purpose the world map serves is to select the town you go to. So it takes figuring out where to go that much longer.

So I'm only about 5 hours in and overall it's enjoyable. The story is a bit bland but I'm willing to see where it goes. The action element is enough to keep me coming back. I always look forward to puzzles. More to come soon. Later Gamers!
